Racial Equity: Liberatory Mathematics Learning Project

Black disabled students face major systemic challenges in K-12 education. Compared to their white counterparts, they are overrepresented in special educational categories of behavioral and intellectual disabilities and face harsher consequences.
To counter these stigmas, this project, led by UC Santa Cruz Education Professor and Institute Faculty Fellow Paulo Tan, uses a justice-oriented math teacher coaching framework to dismantle systemic oppression while advancing learning. Student voices across the nation will be central in informing the framework’s development.
Institute staff member Darío León is helping to lead the collaborative aspects with Oakland Unified School District, coordinating their multi-campus team meetings and organizing the Advisory Board for which Institute staff member Jessica De La Cruz is supporting the logistics around these meetings.
