Joining our Team

The UC Santa Cruz Journal of International Society is the flagship academic publication of the humanities and social sciences of UC Santa Cruz. We publish under the umbrella of The Institute for Social Transformation, who oversees and supports our publication. Our Editorial Board is composed of students and we produce and publish two issues every year. Our brand new publication seeks to rival some of the country’s finest university academic publications.

As a member of the Editorial Board, you will join a group of enterprising editors who have gone on to promising careers and had the opportunity to work personally with professors they admire.

Technical Directors oversee design, marketing, social media, and web presence.

How to Apply:

Please email all inquiries and supplemental information to jourlis@ucsc.edu with the subject line [FIRSTNAME LASTNAME interest in POSITION]

Applicants will receive a reply within three weeks to begin their application process.

Requirements:

  • Must be currently enrolled at University of California, Santa Cruz
  • Must be available for 5 hours a week for journal tasks in the weeks between publications.
  • Must be available for 10-20 hours a week when  the publication process begins
  • Ability to attend as many as two compulsory board meetings per week in the weeks leading up to a publication, whose timings are subject to the entire staff’s availability.

Position Descriptions:

Chief Editors

A three-person panel which appoints technical positions necessary for the production of the journal appoints managing editors, assigns editors to submissions and meetings, assigns advisory board members to submissions, makes executive decisions affecting the production of the journal, and participates in the process of selecting submissions for publishing with the rest of the editors.

Managing Editors

Managing editors are responsible for interacting directly with the authors of the submissions under the counsel of the editorial board.  They are responsible for copy editing the submissions they are assigned for all but the final edit.  Managing editors evaluate and categorize submissions. After which they consult with the remainder of the editorial board on submission quality, potential improvements, and review. Managing editors work closely and directly with chief editors and others. Managing editors will also assist chief editors in administrative duties as needed.

Contributing Editors

Contributing editors have the same functional role in the review process as managing editors, through their editing workload is halved and are not expected to perform or assist in administrative/clerical duties. Their function is auxiliary and acts mainly in the event of receiving a number of contributions beyond the capacity of the chief and managing editors.  Consider applying for this position if interested in being an editor for the journal but cannot meet the time commitments required by other positions.

Technical Directors

These members will aid the editorial board in the printing and production of the journal.  Their crucial function is to oversee design, social media presence, imagery, web, and art of the journal itself. The Technical Directors have a high degree of autonomy but function under the advisement of the Chief Editors. Prior experience in graphic design is preferred but not required.
