Neuroscience
Rising living standards and advances of modern medicine have extended and improved the quality of life, but also forever changed society. The stress of modern life triggers various mental disorders, and our prolonged life expectancy makes aging-related cognitive decline and neurodegeneration more prevalent. Neuroscientists seek to understand how the nervous system interacts with the environment and adapts to experiences.
At UCSC, researchers combine molecular genetics, live imaging, circuit mapping and manipulation, and behavior studies to explore the brain mechanisms under normal and diseased conditions, and to apply such knowledge to improve brain health.
